Preparation Before Sandblasting

Before sandblasting, items should be clean, dry, and free from oil, grease, or loose parts. Mask off any areas that shouldn't be blasted. Proper prep ensures a smooth, effective finish and protects both the item and equipment.

What Not To Do

  • Don’t bring in parts caked in mud, oil, or thick grease.

  • Don’t expect precision work on hidden or masked areas unless discussed.

  • Don’t bring sealed parts with bearings or electronics unless they're disassembled.

Pre-Blasting Prep Steps

  • Degreasing:

    • Use a solvent-based degreaser or hot wash tank to clean oils and contaminants.

  • Masking (if needed):

    • Mask off any areas that shouldn't be blasted using high-temp tape, rubber plugs, or caps.

  • Inspection:

    • Check for damage, cracks, or weaknesses in the material—blasting can make existing damage worse.

How Items Should Be

  • Clean of Oils and Grease:
Wipe down or degrease parts to remove oil, grease, or heavy dirt. Media doesn't work well on oily surfaces.

  • Loose Parts Removed:
Remove bolts, clips, bearings, seals, gaskets, or rubber/plastic parts that shouldn’t be blasted.

  • Dry Condition:
Items should be completely dry. Moisture can clog blasting media and cause rust.
